Cat Ba is the largest island in the Cat Ba Archipelago (Hai Phong), situated right next to Lan Ha Bay and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago". The island has it all — forests, sea, caves, and fishing villages — making it ideal for a 2–3 day trip. Below is a Cat Ba travel guide covering how to get there, the best time to visit, and the top places to see.

How to Get to Cat Ba?

From Hanoi, Cat Ba is about 140 km away. The most popular route is via the Hanoi – Hai Phong Expressway, crossing the Tan Vu – Lach Huyen Bridge to Cat Hai Island, then reaching Cat Ba Island by one of the following options:

  • Ferry: transports passengers, motorbikes, and cars to the island. During summer peak season and weekends, you may have to wait a while.

  • Sea cable car: fast with great views, but carries passengers only — vehicles must be left behind or taken by ferry.

  • High-speed boat from central Hai Phong: takes about 50 minutes; convenient if you arrive in Hai Phong by train or plane.

Many bus operators also sell combined bus-and-ferry or bus-and-cable-car tickets from Hanoi directly to Cat Ba Town. Schedules and fares change by season, so check ahead before you go.

Best Time to Visit Cat Ba

From around April to October the weather is warm, ideal for swimming and boat trips. May to July is the summer peak season, so it gets crowded and room rates are higher. For a quieter experience, consider visiting in April, September, or October — but keep an eye on weather updates during typhoon season.
